EXCLUSIVE: Bernard Tomic’s former training partner Thomas Drouet has revealed what life was really like under John Tomic in this diary extract.
Fascinating read, really. Not only do you get a feeling for what Drouet went through, but you also come to understand the kind of destructive atmosphere under which Bernie has been working his entire career.
What do you like most about Bernie that makes you a fan? And what things do you think he can work on to be better? Also, what are your hopes for the upcoming tournaments and rest of the year for him? :)
Hello! (This is kind of a long reply)
First of all, I love his playing style. While I want to say it was the first thing that caught my eye when I saw him for the first time on TV (AO 2012), to be 100% honest, I watched that first match against Verdasco because (1) he was 19 years old and (2) quite attractive. But that’s just me being a teenage girl. But as I kept watching, I was intrigued by his style and that’s what made me want to watch more. After watching him play, I felt like everyone else was same old same old. But overall I am a fan because he is one of the youngest on tour and has talent to show for it, and he is very fun to watch.
However, he can most definitely improve, because talent only doesn’t cut it these days. While sometimes I think his serve is a real weapon (e.g. Sydney and Wimbledon this year), the rest of the time when he’s not feeling so hot, it’s not. But it definitely should be, with his height, and we know he can hit the 120s (mph) when he’s on, so consistency in that. And really just consistency all around. It seems he’s very moody when he wants to play well, so in Australia he plays loads better than the rest of the year, which is a shame. And not so playing related, he should also work on his press conferences and maybe think a little before causing major controversy ;)
As for the rest of the year, I wanted him to be seeded for the US Open, but I don’t think that will happen. I hope he gets a decent amount of match time before the USO though, at all the Masters tournaments. Don’t want to ask for too much, but I think we could all use a R2 or R3 appearance. And then again, he likes to play better at bigger events, so perhaps we’re in for a surprise at the US Open this year (also don’t need a repeat of last year) :]
Q. How close were you to winning that match? BERNARD TOMIC: Yeah, I was close. I had my chances. Very difficult player to play against here at Wimbledon. Obviously he’s been playing very well. I feel like I had my chance in the third set, and also in the first I had a set point. Couldn’t take it. Unfortunately he got me today. It was good tennis. You know, I was happy with the way I played.
